Job Purpose:
To provide financial leadership to the programs in Development within his/her area of responsibility
As the Finance Director for an Asset (Asset Finance Partner), you will be the CFO of multiple high-value investments worth hundreds of millions of pounds. Your role will involve collaborating closely with the Medicine or Vaccine Development Leader and Team to navigate the entire journey of new medicines or Vaccines, from early development to market launch. You will work alongside colleagues in Commercial, Manufacturing, and Portfolio Management, articulating the value of these investments and crafting a clear roadmap for bringing potential medicines to life as tangible, life-saving treatments. In this pivotal role, you will lead the charge in securing crucial investments at Governance boards, ensuring that financial commitments and performance are monitored and communicated in real-time. You will deliver profound insights and analyses that will shape the development path of these medicines. Your expertise will be instrumental in accelerating the process, mitigating risks, and reducing costs, ultimately expediting the delivery of these life-changing medicines to patients in need. In addition, if you find yourself working in a collaborative setting, your exceptional partnership skills will come into play as you navigate and harmonize different priorities. For this specific role, you will also have responsibility for the Viral R&D research and early development pipeline, working with the Viral R&D Leadership Team, to progress these assets to Phase I and beyond. In addition, you will have responsibilities to manage the Vaccine R&D footprint of this organisation, including the on-going transition from Rockville (Maryland) to Boston (Massachusetts), and investment in our new facilities at Cambridge Park Drive.
Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:
- Work independently, leading Finance Partnering support to the Development programs under his/her responsibility, providing active financial leadership and challenge. Provide support as the first line point of contact for the area under his/her responsibility on all financial matters.
- Lead the finance aspects of business cases relating to the programs within his/her area and provide financial input on behalf of Development into business development transactions in his/her area. Drive the development of innovative options and alternatives to deliver business objectives faster and more efficiently. Drive action and decisions based on clear and crisp communication. Support the VP TA Finance Head to appropriately prioritise budget and resources across the portfolio.
- Lead budgeting and forecasting processes for his/her development programs focusing on robust but pragmatic forecasting which considers the unpredictability of R&D outcomes through scenario analysis and management of attrition. Ensure that business partners are clear on their financial commitments and have a ‘real time’ view of status.
- Accountable of the project valuation used to govern the investment, consolidating inputs from stakeholders (Decision Sciences, Portfolio Management, functions, etc.), understanding sensitivities & risk discharge, and ensuring appropriate documentation of assumptions, for governance and intangible testing purposes.
- Partner with M/VDTs and Portfolio to drive high quality decision making through Governance (e.g., DRB and PIB), validating assumptions and forecasts. Partner with Global Therapy Area Finance on commercial forecasts and scenarios, understanding sensitivities within options provided.
- Support the allocation of Development resources to maximise return on investment and to ensure delivery of R&D objectives. Endorse the use of effort tracking and IRM within the Development programs to drive a comprehensive view of resource allocation. Be an active support for resource allocation, challenging assumptions, and forecasts.
- Ensure that resources are promptly released within the Development programs according to PIB governance.
- Accountable for the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting related to his/her Development programs.
- Understand the Balance Sheet impact of his/her Development programs, the impact of upcoming inflection points, decisions or timing changes on the asset’s valuation any risk of impairments.
- Support delivery of Development results through the provision of analysis, insight and challenge related to performance.
- Direct effective communication to VP TA Finance Head and SVP R&D Finance providing insight on program progression, governance proposals and risks/opportunities within Development programs.
- Drive connections with other functions to optimise decision making, resource allocation and performance across R&D acting as a role model for enterprise thinking.
- Indirect management of finance analysts supporting Development programs, actively supporting growth and development. Act as mentor/coach across R&D Finance.
Why you?
Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting, or equivalent professional experience.
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in finance or accounting roles.
Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Finance Partner in pharmaceutical industry (ie. Vaccines/ R&D)
Experience in setting and delivering financial plans, with specific examples of achieving financial targets or goals.
Experience in connecting with and influencing business stakeholders at all levels in a technical environment, with specific examples of stakeholder engagement or influence.
Experience with modeling, analysis, forecasting, strategic/scenario planning, and decision-making, demonstrated by successful completion of at least 3 relevant projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
MBA (with heavy finance components) or equivalent experience
Basic project management skills, evidenced by participation in or management of at least 1 project.
Experience in business decision-making related to complex problems, supported by financial analysis, evidenced by at least 3 successful projects or initiatives.
Experience in leading and developing a team, with specific examples of team achievements and individual development under your leadership.
Proficient understanding of financial systems and processes, including SAP/CERPS, with at least 2 years of hands-on experience
Effective knowledge of all accounting standards, including IFRS, US GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley
Experience in managing and prioritizing multiple tasks in a complex and fast-moving environment, with specific examples of managing competing priorities.
Delivering on value opportunities while balancing risk and opportunities (Stewardship & Governance)
Developing highly effective working relationships and managing key stakeholders to achieve the partnership status with your business
